Applied art is an art form in which the art objects also have a practical function. Examples include artistically designed furniture, candlesticks, jewellery, lamps, vases, posters, etc. But applied art is more than form and function. Many art objects reflect the zeitgeist of the moment. From various objects we learn more about culture and technology, but also about politics and mobility. They form a layered snapshot full of fascinating stories. Architecture is also a form of applied art. Other names for applied art are decorative art or utilitarian art. A somewhat outdated term for applied art is arts and crafts. Within applied art, design, artistic aesthetics, and ergonomics are applied to everyday utility objects, as mentioned above. Well-known art movements within applied art include Art Nouveau and Art Deco.

Applied art is often referred to by the term design, however, this is not entirely correct. Design is a term for applied art objects that are designed in such a way that they can be mass-produced mechanically. Think of the tubular steel chair.
